Orthodontics

Icon Dental is a family-oriented dental practice, and we always keep a close eye on how our younger patients teeth and jaws are developing. Often, it is easy to see if there will be problems while a child is still quite young and well before they have all their adult teeth, around age seven or earlier.

Helping Children Grow Up with Straighter Smiles

When we can see there could be problems with a child’s teeth and jaw development, we may recommend an orthodontic evaluation.

By seeing a child while they are still very young, we can plan the best age for treatment, making maximum use of growth spurts to guide the growth of their jaws, helping to create a healthier and broader smile. This, in turn, can help a child develop their best facial profile.

Myofunctional Therapy

Myofunctional therapy can be useful when a child has certain oral habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting or mouth breathing, as these can all affect the growth and development of their teeth and jaws.

Myofunctional therapy uses appliances and facial exercises to correct these issues naturally, teaching children how to correctly swallow and breathe so they use their facial muscles properly. Replacing abnormal muscle activity with more normal muscle patterns helps ensure a child’s jaws and facial structure develops more fully, creating enough room for their adult teeth to come through.

We can sometimes treat children as young as three, but this depends on whether they can understand the treatment and are willing to wear the appliances and perform the necessary facial exercises.

Adult Oriented Orthodontics

Orthodontics is no longer just for children, and we see an increasing number of adults seeking to straighten their teeth. Treatment can be beneficial at any age, and while most people only think of orthodontics improving their smile, it can sometimes provide oral health benefits. When teeth are overlapping and crooked, they are harder to keep clean and may wear unevenly or place the jaw joints under stress. Straightening teeth, so they bite together correctly can help avoid these problems.

Icon Dental provides adult-oriented braces that are virtually invisible, using removable clear aligners. These aligners provide predictable results using computer planned treatment. The aligners are extremely easy to use, with minimal disruption to everyday life. Because they are removable, there is no need to avoid certain foods or change your oral care routine.
